seen by someone, but that it would probably not be
possible to give him any further information yet.
The Inspector-General's action is rather
unusual but presumably he telephoned his London
Office because Mr. Clunie's leave has already expired
and no doubt he thought that if his recommendation
was accepted that Mr. Clunie could proceed direct
to Hong Kong. As it happens however Mr. Clunie is
still on sick leave and is due to be re-examined
by the Consulting Physician to the Colonial Office
in Edinburgh about the 22nd of December, and it is
highly improbable that he will leave this country
in any case before the beginning of January, so that
there is no immediate hurry. I think however that
we might send a telegraphic reminder to Palestine
reference (34) informing them that it is understood
from the Palestine Police London Office that the
Inspector-General has recommended Mr. Clunie for
transfer to Hong Kong and asking for confirmation and
also whether they are recommending any other
candidates. We might also remind Ceylon by telegram
reference (33).
As Mr. Clunie is coming down specially from
York and as we may later have to make a selection
from a few candidates it might be as well therefore
if you were to see him and record your impressions
as we have very little information about him here.
